StoryTree Quarterly

StoryTree Quarterly is StoryTree's main publication. Issues release in February, May, August, and November.

Each issue features 25 contributors sharing poetry, short stories, creative nonfiction, artwork, and photography. Our issues have explored themes of environmentalism, love, grief, war, magical realism, nature, LGBTQ+ experiences, mental health, chronic illness, disability, and more.

StoryTree Quarterly has published creative powerhouses, like BAFTA Scotland winner Sean Lìonadh and Scottish National Slam Champion Aditya Narayan, as well as beginners sharing their work for the first time. No experience is necessary to submit to StoryTree!

WE ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR SUBMISSIONS

What We Look For

StoryTree welcomes art and artists of all mediums, including:

  • Poetry

  • Short Stories

  • Creative Nonfiction

  • Personal Essays

  • Artist Interviews

  • Drawings

  • Paintings

  • Photography

We are particularly interested in art with a unique perspective and work from marginalised artists. StoryTree is intended for an adult audience, as such we are not interested in work aimed towards children.

StoryTree is not interested in work that endorses bigoted views. StoryTree is a safe space for people of all races, nationalities, immigration-status, genders, sexualities, and abilities.

The best way to see if your work would fit StoryTree is to read our previous issues.

If you are unsure if your work is suitable for StoryTree, please email an inquiry to storytreezine@gmail.com.

Guidelines

Please ensure all submissions adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Poetry - Up to 5 pages per poem.

  • Prose - 500-5000 words.

  • Artwork - Must be at least 300dpi.

  • Physical Artwork - If you are submitting physical artwork, please provide a clear, high quality photograph or scan of the work. Photographs should be taken straight-on in a well-lit space with no shadows obscuring the work and should not include the background (table, easel, wall, etc.)

  • Cover Art - The cover art for each issue is selected from the art and photography submissions.

  • Formatted Poetry - Poems with experimental formats are allowed. However, if the format does not fit StoryTree's editorial guidelines, a rewrite with a new format will be offered to the poet. If the poet declines the new format, the poem will unfortunately not be able to be included in the issue.

  • Language - Must be primarily written in English but may feature other languages. Please note: our editor will not be able to catch typos, grammar mistakes, and spelling errors in other languages so take extra care when proofreading work that includes other languages.

  • Copyright - All work must belong to the submitting artist(s).

  • Previous Publication - Previously published work is permitted provided you own the publishing rights. Please clearly indicate in your submission if your work has been previously published and state where and when it was published. Work submitted for StoryTree In Conversation is ineligible.

  • No AI-generated work.

  • Payment - Unfortunately, StoryTree is not in a position to pay contributors. However, all artists will receive a contributor coupon code to access their issue for free.

  • Multiple Categories - You can submit to as many categories as you like! Please include all writing submissions together in the one form and all art submissions together in the one form. If you are submitting writing and art, you will need to submit a form for each.

  • Editing - StoryTree reserves the right to lightly edit pieces, correcting spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes, and typos. Any significant editing changes will be worked on collaboratively with the artist(s).

  • Sharing - By submitting to StoryTree, you are consenting that successful work may be shared on the StoryTree social medias, website, and promotional material. All work will be credited to the artist(s).

  • Rights and Acknowledgements - Artists retain the copyright to their work. If your work is later published in a future publication (magazine, book, exhibition), we ask that you acknowledge its first appearance in StoryTree.

Submit

Submissions should be sent via the Google Forms linked below. There are two forms for submission: writing and art.

Please format submissions as follows:

  • Single Document - Include all pieces in a single document with clear divides between pieces. You'll make the editor's day if your pieces are ordered alphabetically by title!

  • Artist Biography - Include an artist biography written in third-person, approximately 100 words.

  • Social Medias - Include any relevant links to your website and/or social medias.

  • Content Warnings - If your work contains sensitive subjects, please include a content warning with possible triggers, e.g. grief, violence, addiction, illness, etc.

  • Artwork - Please name your artwork with its title and the artist's name. Please state the work's medium, materials used, and date of creation.

Issue Launches

We celebrate the release of each issue with a Launch Night at The Bungalow in Paisley. Our Launch Nights feature performances from the issue contributors sharing their poetry, short stories, and creative writing.

About The Venue

All StoryTree events are held in The Bungalow. The Bungalow is partially wheelchair accessible. The front entrance has stepped access with a banister; wheelchair users can enter the building via the stage door. There is unfortunately no disabled/wheelchair accessible bathroom. However, the bathrooms each have one larger stall with supports. A stool is available on stage for performers who wish to sit for their performances. The Bungalow is a nut-free venue.

Getting To The Venue

Paisley Gilmour Street Station (0.4 miles) and Paisley Canal Station (0.3 miles) are both close by and wheelchair accessible. The closest bus stops are on Causeyside Street (120 yards). The closest parking is on George Place (70 yards) or George Street (200 yards). Please note The Bungalow is on a cobbled street.

StoryTree are dedicated to being a safe and accessible space for everyone, regardless of gender identity, race, sex, ability, etc. If you have any feedback on how we can make our events more suitable for you, please get in touch!
