StoryTree In Conversation

StoryTree is launching a brand new project: StoryTree In Conversation.

Our new series offers creatives a chance to publish their writing/artwork, create new work, and engage with other artists. Contributors will submit writing or artwork for the Prompt Pieces. They will then receive an anonymous Prompt Piece and will create a New Work inspired by it. All of the Prompt Pieces and the New Works will be published together in a zine with brief paragraphs from the contributors sharing how the pieces inspired them.

Submissions close when we have reached 12 artists. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis. If you'd like to contribute, read our guidelines and submit below!

Please note: StoryTree In Conversation is a separate series from StoryTree's quarterly issues. Submissions for StoryTree In Conversation will not be considered for the quarterly issues and vice versa. If you would like to contribute to both series, you must submit to each separately.

STORYTREE IN CONVERSATION IS CLOSED FOR SUBMISSIONS

How to Participate

Step 1 Submit your Prompt Piece before submissions close.

Step 2 - Receive a Prompt Piece to inspire your New Work.

Step 3 - Create your New Work in one month and submit by the deadline.

Step 4 - Submit your New Work with a brief paragraph sharing how you were inspired by the Prompt Piece you received.

Step 5 - Enjoy the magazine when it comes out and see how another artist engaged with your work!

Example - Submit a poem for your Prompt Piece and receive a painting to inspire your New Work which could take the form of another poem, another painting, or a new medium altogether! Then, when the zine comes out, enjoy seeing your original poem, the piece you created, and the piece inspired by your work!

Guidelines

Please ensure all submissions adhere to the following guidelines:

Prompt Pieces

  • Please submit no more than 3 poems2 prose pieces, and/or 3 artworks. Only 1 work will be selected as a Prompt Piece.

  • There is no theme for the Prompt Pieces.

  • Previous Publication - Previously published work is permitted provided you own the publishing rights. However, work included in StoryTree's quarterly issues is ineligible. Please clearly indicate in your submission if your work has been previously published and state where and when it was published.

  • By submitting to StoryTree In Conversation, you are consenting to another artist using your Prompt Piece as inspiration for a New Work.

New Works

  • Please submit only 1 piece as your New Work.

  • Inspiration - Your New Work must be inspired by your assigned Prompt Piece. You will not know the artist of the Prompt Piece or anything about them; you will only be given the piece itself and the title. It is left to you how much inspiration you take from your assigned Prompt Piece - it could be inspired by the whole piece or just one line!

  • Medium - The medium of your New Work does not have to be the same as your own Prompt Piece or your assigned Prompt Piece. Feel free to experiment creatively with new mediums.

  • Reflection - Along with your New Work, you must also write a brief paragraph (between 100-300 words) discussing how you created your New Work and the inspiration you took from your assigned Prompt Piece.

  • By submitting to StoryTree In Conversation, you are confirming you can create a New Work in one month and submit it by the deadline.

General

  • Poetry - up to 5 pages per poem.

  • Prose - 500-5000 words.

  • Artwork - Must be at least 300dpi.

  • Cover Art - The cover art will be accepted from the art and photography submissions - both Prompt Pieces and New Works.

  • Language - Must be primarily written in English but may feature other languages. Please note: our editor will not be able to catch typos, grammar mistakes, and spelling errors in other languages so take extra care when proofreading work that includes other languages.

  • Copyright - All work must belong to the submitting artist(s).

  • No AI-generated work.

  • Payment - Unfortunately, StoryTree is not in a position to pay contributors. However, all artists will receive a contributor coupon code to access their issue for free.

  • Editing - StoryTree reserves the right to lightly edit pieces, correcting spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes, and typos.

  • Sharing - By submitting to StoryTree In Conversation, you are consenting that successful work may be shared on the StoryTree social medias, website, and promotional material. All work will be credited to the artist(s).

  • Rights and Acknowledgements - Artists retain the copyright to their work. If your work is later published in a future publication (magazine, book, exhibition), we ask that you acknowledge its first appearance in StoryTree.

Submit

Submissions should be sent via the Google Forms linked below. There are two forms for submission: writing and art.

Please format submissions as follows:

  • Single Document - Include all pieces in a single document with clear divides between pieces. You'll make the editor's day if your pieces are ordered alphabetically by title!

  • Artist Biography - Include an artist biography written in third-person, approximately 100 words.

  • Social Medias - Include any relevant links to your website and/or social medias.

  • Content Warnings - If your work contains sensitive subjects, please include a content warning with possible triggers, e.g. grief, violence, addiction, illness, etc.

  • Artwork - Please name your artwork with its title and the artist's name. Please state the work's medium, materials used, and date of creation.
